$CHA CHING$…”NEW MOON”= $250 MILLION + in 3 day GLOBAL OPENING

That’s right…”NEW MOON” claimed the #3 all time DOMESTIC three day opening[$140M+] behind “SPIDER MAN III” & the #1 record holder [for a 3 day opening] “DARK KNIGHT” [$158M+]…So when you add up “NEW MOON’S $140M U.S opening and throw in the
$118M+ FOREIGN TAKE from it’s day & date [simultaneous] international opening [on over 6,ooo over seas screens] you end up with “NEW MOON” delivering a stunning QUARTER OF A BLLION DOLLAR… 3 DAY WORLD WIDE BOX OFFICE HAUL.

PIXAR: a BRAND you can TRUST

The following BOX OFFICE commentary is based on weekend estimates for 5/29-31…….This past weekend’s unspooling of PIXAR’S latest theatrical release: “UP” confirms and continues their dominance in family movie attendance. With an estimated three day take of $68M +, “UP” takes it’s rightfull place among the previous nine PIXAR releases since 1995. The previous NINE have a cumulative domestic [U.S./CANADA] box office gross of over $2 BILLION. Even I can figure that this averages over $200M per TITLE [now that's a formula that works] Maybe these people at PIXAR should run the rest of the world too!…At #2 this weekend: “NIGHT at the MUSEUM:BATTLE for the SMITHSONIAN” tallied a very strong $25M + for it’s second weekend and total of $105m+ to date. Since the original “NIGHT at the MUSEUM” [released 12/06] finished with $250M+ domestic, it appears that FOX and their “MUSEUM PEOPLE” have established their own successful brand. AT #3 UNIVERSAL debuts “DRAG ME TO HELL” for $16M+. Although this is indeed a somewhat modest opening with marginal hold over prospects….there is hope for the future when you consider that the “SAW” series debuted in OCT 04 to $18M+ [3 DAYS] and all of the subsequent “SAW” releases: II,III,IV & V have all opened to $30M+ [3 day] with “SAW” VI opening this halloween. At #4 “TERMINATOR SALVATION” rang up $16M+ in weekend #2 with a total to date of $90M +.
My expectations for this re-tooled franchise were such that I thought it would have been at the $90M+ level after it’s first five days in release. Although this effort will fall a bit short of the decisive world-wide success we were hoping for WARNERS [or whoever has the rights] can still turn the next “TERMINATOR” outing into the $1 BILLION WORLD-WIDE MEGA HIT it is capable of being IF……..
they follow the lead of PARAMOUNT/STAR TREK & CO and go with an all out no holds barred…..”REBOOT”. At #5 PARAMOUNT’S “STAR TREK” deposited $12.8M+ in it’s 4th weekend for a total to date of $209M+. This is probably the most successful rebranding/rebooting/re-energizing of a franchise property ever [although PARAMOUNT did very well with their recent [2/09] re-launch of “FRIDAY the 13TH”]. At #6 is SONY’S “ANGELS & DEMONS” which tallied $11M+ for weekend #3 & has a total to date of $104M+. Although it will not break thru the $200M domestic take that “DAVINCI” made “ANGELS” will still approach/top $150M domestic and perform admirably WORLD-WIDE. At #7 PARAMOUNT’S 2nd weekend of “DANCE FLICK” slipped to a $4.9M+ 3 day grossl, a $19M+ total & a devastating 2nd weekend per location avg of $1900+ @ 2400 locations.
